100 And Counting...
Dinner Planned As Resident Reaches Milestone
Glenview resident Isabelle Brost turns 100-years-old next week. A formal dinner and campaign reception is scheduled at Chestnut Square at The Glen on Saturday Mar. 6 to celebrate her birthday.
Born on Chicago's South Side in 1910, Brost lived in several neighborhoods in Chicago before joining the U.S. Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) in 1942 as one of the first women from the area to join after World War II broke out.
She served in the Navy WAVES in Boston and Chicago in the Shore Patrol until the end of the war in 1946. She never served overseas saying women only served in the United States.
After the war, Brost attended Loyola University on the G.I. Bill to become a CPA.
Brost came to Glenview in 1957 and has stayed here ever since working as an accountant in Lincolnwood.
When asked what has contributed to her longevity Brost replied, "I don't know. Clean living, maybe it's because I never married."
She continued, "I take it day by day. Things are not any different now than on my 90th or 95th birthday."
For all the changes in the last 100 years Brost said the one that stands out is the closing of the Glenview Naval Air Station, now the Glen Town Center. Brost remains active with Chestnut Square Senior Center, helping fellow seniors with their taxes and keeping the books for the organization's investment club.
